Description

In the well-protected bay the village of Milna developed in the 18th century. The parish church of the Annunciation was built in 1783, with a baroque façade and the striking, typical Dalmatian bell tower at the harbour.
During the Napoleonic Wars the Russian fleet had its base in Milna and the Tsar had a residence here. The Venetians called it - "Valle di Mille Navi" - Bay of a Thousand Ships. A natural harbour, here in the year 300 the stones for the construction of Diocletian's Palace in Split were loaded and "a little later", around 1600 also for the construction of the neoclassical columned front of the "White House" in Washington.
Worth seeing old town with the narrow streets and fieldstone houses. At the harbour the two-storey houses of the captains, ship owners and traders (18th and 19th century).
