Sveti Djordje, also known as "Island of the Dead" an island with
a traditional style church and large cypress trees. Here is a
Benedictine monastery with church (7th century) and a cemetery with
graves of prominent citizens from Peras. The island is famous for
the tragic story of Ante and Katica. During the Napoleonic invasion
in 1813, the men of Perast hid in the tower of Sveti Kriz above
Perast. The French retreated to Sveti Djordje (St. George). One of
the soldiers of the French army, Ante Slovic, was from Cres, and
was engaged to the girl Katica from Perast. The French soldiers
opened fire on Sveti Kriz, but a cannonball fell short and hit
Katica's house. She was buried on the island of Sveti Djordje. Ante
became a hermit. He stayed on Sveti Djordje and became a monk in
the monastery, when he died in1821 he was buried next to
Katica.
Sveti Djordje is still a Benedictine monastery today. It is not
open to visitors.
