The legend of "Our Lady of the Rocks" goes back more than 500
years and says that on July 22, 1452 two brothers were returning to
Perast one of them had an injured leg. As they passed St. George,
the 12th century monastery on the island in front of the city, they
saw something caught on a ledge. They found an icon of the Virgin
Mary and Child. The brothers took the icon and the next day a
miracle had happened; the brother's leg was healed. They vowed to
build a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary on the rock. Since the
rock was too small to build a church, sailors dropped shiploads of
stones and sank old boats. Sailors threw stones at the site as they
went out to sea, hoping to be protected. In 1484 -32 years after
icons were found, an island with a chapel stood on the site.
When pirates from Tunisia and Carthage attacked Perast on June 22,
1624, the churches were destroyed and most of the population was
taken into slavery. In 1630, almost 200 years, the church was
rebuilt by the Venetians.
