Budva is about 2,500 years old and is one of the oldest settlements
on the Adriatic coast. The Greek colonization of the Adriatic began
in the 4th century BC and Budva became a trading center. In the 2nd
century BC Budva was part of the Roman Empire. In the 6th century
Budva was part of the Byzantine Empire, and in the following 200
years Slavs and Avars came to the region. In 841 Budva was
devastated by Muslim Saracens. In the early Middle Ages Budva was
ruled by Doclean kings and Serbian and Zetan aristocrats.
Circa 1200 Budva became the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese, which lasted until 1828. The Venetians ruled the city for almost 400 years, from 1420 to 1797. Budva, in those centuries was part of the Venetian Republic of Albania Veneta and was fortified by mighty Venetian walls against Ottoman conquests. Most of the population spoke the Venetian language until the beginning of the 19th century.
