The tower was built in the 1700s as part of a watch and
signal tower system against pirate attacks along the coast. When
enemy ships were sighted, a signal fire was lit, alerting the
neighbouring towers, each built within sight, and the hinterland,
and bells were used to alert the inhabitants.
