Information

Danger - Chain Ferry

Mariners are advised that the water depth varies over the chains, depending on the state of the tide and the position of the ferry in relation to either the east or west riverbank. A minimum depth over the chains of approximately 1,7 metres below Chart Datum exists in the centre of the available water when the ferry is berthed on the west bank and a minimum depth of 2,0 metres below Chart Datum when the ferry is berthed on the east bank. The clearance over the chains reduces nearer to the river banks. Under certain conditions when the ferry is underway, the chains may rise to the surface. Strong tidal streams exist in this area, the ebb rate being in excess of 4 knots on the eastern side of the river on spring tides. Mariners should exercise extreme caution in the vicinity and see Admiralty Sailing Directions and www.cowesharbourcommission.co.uk for further details.
