NV Land Guide

The founders of today's smallest town in Germany (town charter since 1934) were 64 indomitable families from Kappeln who did not want to become serfs of the landowner of Roest, Detlef von Rumohr, in 1666. The lord of the manor used brutal force against those who refused to take the oath of allegiance. The Duke of Gottorf saved the day. The sovereign assigned the island of Arnis to the renegades as a place of residence and granted the privileges necessary for shipping and trade. The church, built in 1673, was one of the first buildings erected on the island by the Arnissers, who were considered to be particularly pious and God-fearing.

Already 60 years after the foundation of the island village, the new settlers were also considered to be particularly wealthy people who - freed from the oppressive constraints of the nobility - had achieved something. Trading ships that sailed as far as the West Indies brought wealth and prestige to the burgeoning trading centre. With only about 800 inhabitants, the merchant fleet numbered about 90 (!) ships around 1850. A veritable forest of masts surrounded the island. But the prosperity did not last long. The German-Danish war of 1864 ruined the prosperity, because the Danish sales areas were lost. Therefore the Prussians, who crossed the Schlei here in 1864 on a pontoon bridge built by them, were not welcome. The emergence of steam navigation meant the final economic fiasco for the village. Many Arnissers emigrated.

Like the Maasholmers, the Arnissers were left only with sea and inland fishing, albeit with considerable locational advantages for the Maasholmers. For many years Arnis was a flourishing shipyard location and profited especially from the nearby naval base Olpenitz. But both are now history. After all, Arnis still has three boatyards today, although only the Mathiesen & Paulsen shipyard has dedicated itself to traditional boatbuilding and still builds beautiful, classic wooden yachts.

The town, which has a population of around 500, is rightly nicknamed the "Pearl on the Schlei". Most of Arnis stretches along both sides of the lime-lined Lange Straße. Unfortunately, the mill of the small town has been demolished. The once typical porches, oriels or utluchten can now only be seen on a few houses.

Nevertheless, Arnis offers a self-contained historic townscape that is second to none. Storm tides have repeatedly caused problems for the inhabitants of the flat peninsula. The extent of the floods can be imagined by looking at the high-water mark attached to an ivy-covered house in Parkstraße.

Nowadays, nobody knows exactly how the town got its town charter in 1934 - whether through a shield prank, a Köpenickiade or a correct administrative act. Although the mayor of the time had worked hard to get Arnis recognized as a town, there is no town charter. Instead, official seals with the designation "town of Arnis" are said to have been sent to the authorities by the district administration office in 1934 without further justification - and of course they were diligently used.

Even more peculiar is the story that made Arnis become a "bath". On a trip to the Schleif, responsible administrative officials are said to have discovered the sign "Bad" on the bathing beach and from this drew the razor-sharp conclusion that it was the place "Bad Arnis". However, Bad meant the bathing establishment on the Schlei.

At the beginning of August, the festival "Musik am Noor" (Music at the Noor) attracts many visitors every year, who spend an atmospheric weekend with nice people and a good mood in Arnis, accompanied by music from folk, rock, jazz, blues, Dixiland and swing.

Since the beginning of the 1980s, NV.Verlag has developed here in Arnis as a family business into the largest supplier of sport boat maps in Germany. From Lange Straße, our nautical charts went all over Europe to the Mediterranean and to the other side of the Atlantic to the Caribbean or the Bahamas. Since the end of 2012, we have moved our headquarters to more spacious premises in Eckernförde.
