NV Land Guide

Haderslev is a commercial center, garrison town, port city, school town and cultural center. At the end of the 15-kilometer-long fjord of the same name, which in turn is connected to the eight-kilometer-long Haderslev Dam. The town arose at a fork in the road during the twelfth century and grew so quickly that it was granted city rights by King Waldemar IV as early as 1292. The Gothic cathedral - built in the 13th century - towers over the town, which still has many small old houses in its center. With its twelve-meter-high windows, the cathedral is one of the city's special sights. Inside, a baroque pulpit and a bronze baptismal font from 1485 are impressive.

Haderslev was once one of the largest and most important port cities in Jutland. To this day, the city thrives on trade and industry, but modern residential and commercial buildings and a unique skate park have since been built on the former industrial quays on the north side of the harbor. Nevertheless, the Prussian influence cannot be overlooked in the cityscape. From 1864 to 1920, Haderslev belonged to the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein. The squiggled facades of the old houses, typical for this time, remained.

Because of its geographical location, the city was often affected by wars, which often destroyed an upswing that was just beginning to be felt. In addition, a massive fire devastated Haderslev in 1627. Denmark lost one of its most beautiful Renaissance castles when the royal Hansburg burned down during the occupation by Swedish troops in 1644. Despite the many destructions by fire and wars, the city has kept its charm until today.

A tour of the beautiful old town is mandatory. The path should lead through Højgade, Naffet, Klingbjerg, Slotsgade and the monastery district. It is noticeable that many houses have been restored very carefully. Through the monastery quarter you come to the Dampark, where the damboat "Dorothea" docks, with which you can make a small round trip on the lake of the same name. A hiking trail of twelve kilometers leads around Haderslev Dam, past the holy spring Sophies Kilde via Fredstedt back to Haderslev.
A memorial on the shore of Dam Lake, at the site of the event, commemorates the shipping disaster in July 1959, when the excursion boat "Turisten" caught fire and exploded due to problems with the gasoline engine. on the overcrowded boat, 54 of 94 passengers died. Since then, only diesel fuel is allowed on passenger ships in Denmark.

From June 15 to August 15, old horse-drawn carriages can be seen in "Det gamle Ridehus"'. Throughout the year, the weekly market is held on Tuesdays and Fridays at Gravene. Every Friday, a regimental marching band marches to the cathedral at about 2:15 p.m. to turn a page in the memorial book for the regiment's fallen. Only during the industrial vacations in July is not marched.

The Haderslev Museum in Dalgade 7 with open-air department is worth a visit. Among other things, excavation finds dating back to Roman times can be seen.

The largest collection of ceramics and stoneware in Europe can be seen at Slotsgade 20, in a restored house built in 1580.

There is also a German library in Haderslev at Bispegade 15 to 17.
