NV Land Guide

Assens used to handle all ferry traffic between the islands and the mainland. The town is said to have taken its name from the ash trees that grew on the peninsula west of the town in the Middle Ages. Assens presents itself as an architecturally harmonious town with attractive half-timbered buildings from the town's heyday. With the construction of the bridge over the Little Belt, the former trading metropolis lost its significance as an important ferry town. Today, only the ferry connection to the island of Bågö remains.

The Willemoesgården Museum provides information about the time when Assens was still an important place for ferry traffic. It is also the birthplace of the naval hero Peter Willemoes, who distinguished himself in a naval battle against Nelson in 1801 and fell in the Battle of Sjællands Odde in 1808. From 1723 to 1793, the building was owned by the Crown under the name "Royal Magazine and Office Administration". On May 11, 1783, the future naval hero was born on the farm. Today, paintings, ship models, weapons and personal items belonging to Peter Willemoes are on display on the second floor. Other exhibitions in the museum shed light on the city's guild system, seafaring, shipbuilding and construction. The museum in Østergade 36 is also an impressive half-timbered building from the 17th century, the heyday of Assen.

Many of the exhibits in the Mands Museum in Damgade 26 are almost forged works of art from today's perspective, but were part of the blacksmith's daily trade 100 years ago and more. The exhibits include a baby carriage that is over 100 years old, a bellows suction cup and a penny-farthing. Old coins, weapons and a complete shoemaker's workshop complete the collection of the museum, which was founded in 1951 by master blacksmith Anton Jensen.

An extensive collection of silver and porcelain can be seen in the Fabrikant-Ernst-Museum at Østergade 57.

In the harbor, near the Bågø ferry dock, an old cookhouse is a reminder of the time when food for the crews of sailing ships was prepared on land because hot meals could not be prepared on board due to the risk of fire. It is hard to imagine that the small house had enough space for the cooks of several ships' crews. An excursion to the scenic island of Bågø is no problem thanks to the ferry connections (approx. 30 minutes' drive).

At 60 meters long, St. Mary's Church, famous for its wooden sculptures, is one of the largest on Funen. Once a Romanesque church, it was rebuilt in the 15th century, but remnants of the Romanesque style can still be seen today. The altarpiece depicting the Last Supper is one of the most interesting objects inside the church.

The town has generous green spaces. The city park with its idyllic forest lake is perfect for a stroll. The highest mountain in Fyn, the 131-metre-high Frøberg, is located around 12 kilometers northeast of Assens and offers a magnificent view. If you are interested in folklore, the village of Gummerup is 15 kilometers away. The Westfynen homestead was founded here in 1930 as a museum of village culture. The half-timbered farmhouse is furnished like a Westphalian farmhouse in the previous century. There is also a smithy dating back to 1746. Occasionally there are demonstrations of how the old trades were practiced.

South-east of Assens, on Heinæs Bay, lies Løgismose Castle, built in 1575.

Hafen leider mäßig attraktiv, hier kommt man wegen der Versorgung hin. Großer Super Brugsen, kostenlose Leihräder! Spielplatz eingezäunt (Wer wird hier vor wem geschützt?).

Ordentliche sanitäre Einrichtungen, Bäcker + Supermarkt in 1km fußläufig erreichbar. Strand 200m entfernt für Sonnenuntergänge. Der Hafen selbst versprüht nicht übermäßig viel Charme
