NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the unlit fjord is unproblematic during the day. At night, those unfamiliar with the area are advised against it. Coming from Als Sund, one steers towards the 38m high hill of the island Barsø until the east buoy off "Starbæk Grund" is reached. From here, steer 320° towards the south coast of "Sønderballe Hoved" until you can sail into the middle of the bay at 280°. Coming from the northeast, you sail around the northern shore of the island of Barsø at an appropriate distance until you can approach the church of Løjt at 229°. With this course you pass Sønderballe Hoved until you can steer into the middle of the bay with 280°. The approach to the plant itself is then from the north.

Berths

The possibilities to moor at the eastern bulwark in 3m water depth are very limited, but instead you can find very good anchoring grounds in Genner Bugt, especially on the south shore. Guests can also moor at the head of the two western jetties.

BARSØ:
The small jetty on the western shore of Barsø Island may be used by pleasure boats. However, you will find good anchorage ground south of the jetty. At shallow water depth, you lie in the shelter of the wooded island.

Surroundings

Very limited utilities. There was a hotel with restaurant, but it has been closed for some time.

NV Land Guide

Kalvø Connected to the mainland only by a small causeway, Kalvø is the place to be for those weary of civilisation, unless they decide to visit at holiday time. During the high season there can also be some hustle and bustle here, as this area is popular with recreation-seekers from Apenrade and Hadersleben.

More than 130 years ago Kalvø was a well-known shipyard location. It was here that some of the great China ships were launched. The shipowner Jörgen Bruun had his world-famous clippers built at Kalvø. The former shipyard now houses the sanitary facilities of the small harbour. The seaside hotel, where traditional Danish cuisine is now served, is also said to have been part of the shipyard buildings.

Beautiful bathing beaches around Kalvø and large wooded areas are reasons to visit the place. During the spring and summer months, the Kalvø Mini Museum is open. It displays ship models from the shipyard era. Local history collections are also part of the small museum's display.

Exotic trees and plants have been at home here for over 100 years. Sailors brought them back from their China voyages back then. The southwestern part of the bay around Kalvø is now a wildlife sanctuary.

There is no grocery store in the village of 30 inhabitants, but there is shopping in Genner, three kilometres away.

BarsøThe island's 35 inhabitants in the Little Belt live almost exclusively from agriculture. They are basically not attuned to recreational boaters. However, those who appreciate the tranquillity and rural surroundings, as well as being well supplied with provisions, will visit an idyllic island, particularly known for its wild daffodils and berry-rich bends. In southerly and westerly winds, however, the small ferry bridge on the south-west coast of the island offers too little protection to stay there for long. If the wind does not want to blow from the northeast, there is also the option of exploring the fertile island in a less nautical way - by ferry from Barsø Landing on the Løjtland peninsula.
