Description

This small seafaring town, rich in tradition, is today one of the most endearing places in southern Denmark.

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach is possible via the well buoyed and lit Svendborgsund fairway by day and night.

Downbound yachts, however, should stay away from the Middelgrund and approach Troense from the northeast.

Berths

On the outside of the yacht jetties or on the steamer bridge, guests can moor by arrangement with the harbour master (1 - 6m). However, the bridgehead must remain free in summer for the passenger boat "Helge". The former wooden wharf "JacobsenPlads" about 200m east of the steamer bridge is private and not suitable for guest moorers.

Anchorage: A good anchorage is located at the southwestern edge of the Middelgrund at 3 - 4m water depth, but northwest of the middle ground is old ground tackle in 6 - 7m water depth.

Surroundings

Businessman near the harbour. In summer ferry to Svendborg with the small passenger steamer "Helge"

The many listed half-timbered houses of Troense on Tåsinge alone are worth a visit to the charming seafaring village. The well-kept 18th-century buildings, with their carved doors and small windows, match the dainty front gardens where sailors once planted the rare plants they brought home from their voyages to China. The sailors lived in Badstuen and Grønnegade, with Grønnegade in particular offering a cohesive streetscape of days gone by. It is said to be "Denmark's most beautiful street".

Outside Troense, Waldemar's Castle and the Tåsinger Schifferhaus are worth seeing on Tåsinge - incidentally the third largest island in Funen. The noble residence, which lies about two kilometres south of Troense, is one of the largest private castle complexes in the country. It houses a toy museum, a hunting museum and the actual castle museum. Open to the public as a manor museum, it offers an insight into life on such a manor over the course of three centuries. The waterfront building was built by King Christian IV for his son, Count Waldemar. The naval hero Niels Juel acquired the castle as prize money for his victory in the Bay of Köge. His descendants still own the castle today. The sea hero turned the Renaissance building into a late Baroque complex and around 1750 a gate building, a stable wing and a tea pavilion to the sound were also built. The magnificent rococo-style furnishings also date from this period. There are more than 20 rooms to visit, one of which contains a picture and text of the Battle of Køge. Not far from the castle stands the mighty 700-year-old Ambrosius Oak, which owes its name to the 18th-century poet and castle scribe, Ambrosius Stub.

How a Troens family lived a good 100 years ago can be seen in the Tåsinger Schifferhaus on the church hill in Bregninge. The half-timbered building with a folklore collection was part of a school building from 1827. A curiosity is a bathtub with a stove from the previous century. In addition, a small exhibition here describes the circumstances of the love drama between Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre, a beautiful tightrope walker and a count unhappily in love with her. The distraught count shot first his lover and then himself during a trip to the woods one summer day in 1889. The gravestones of the two can still be seen today in the cemetery at Landet church some three kilometres south of Bregninge.

On a clear day, the 72-metre-high church hill at Bregninge offers views as far as North Schleswig. On a clear day, you can see about 20 islands, 60 churches and 15 manors from the top of the church tower.

The veteran ship "MS Helge", built in 1924, also calls at Troense as part of the Sund cruise (see also Svendborg).
