Navigation

The approach to the well-fired harbour is possible day and night. From far out to sea, you can make out Kalundborg Radio's transmission masts and the power station. The inner fairway is well buoyed, but the reckless ferry traffic forces special caution.

Berths

Guests usually find a place in the Westhafen, which is very central (water depth: 1.8-2.8 m). Large yachts can also moor at the northern commercial quay by arrangement. The marina on the Gisseløre peninsula is very busy with local yachts and very variable in its water depths.

Surroundings

Good supply facilities (including diesel and sailmaking). Ferry connections to Århus and Samsø.

NV Land Guide

The small village that lay here at the end of the bay around the year 1000 was called Hærvig (Army Bay). Several times the great war fleets of the Vikings gathered here to make their raids. The bay was not only a convenient starting point for war campaigns, but also a protected trading place. But it became even more lively after Esbern Snare (1126-1202) from the powerful Hvide family on Zealand found the place suitable to build a fortress in 1170. Hærvig became Kalundborg, and Army Bay became the fortress at Jackdaw Forest. Excavations revealed that Esbern Snare had two outer castles built. The central castle was Kalundborg Castle, which Waldemar Atterdag did not finally complete until 1350. In it the powerful men of the realm held court and made decisions about war and peace. However, towards the end of the Middle Ages the castle lost its importance as a "Reichstag"". The Swedes succeeded in conquering the fortress and destroying the castle in 1659. However, they did not do anything themselves, but ordered the townspeople to "grind down" the castle. All that remained of the castle was the tower in Skolegade. Because of its thick walls, it had the reputation of being the sturdiest fortress tower in the north in the Middle Ages.

After the destruction of the castle, the square served as a cattle paddock until the town hall and market square were built on the same site in 1854. Not far from the market square you can see the remains of "Father's Hat"", an old prison tower where King Christian II was imprisoned for over ten years until his death.

Not only the remains are preserved of one of the most peculiar buildings of the north, the Frauenkirche. Even from afar, the famous structure towering over the city can be seen. The Byzantine design of the church with its five octagonal towers is particularly striking. The architecture, influenced by the South Slavic East, can be explained by the Crusades, which obviously inspired the Occident culturally. A Greek cross forms the basic plan of the church. The second distinctive feature of the church building is the brick, which was still an unusual building material at the time.

What Kalundborg looked like before the destruction of the castle can be seen on a miniature model of the medieval fortress town in the museum in Adelgade. Of particular interest, however, are the folk costumes on display at the Lindegården Museum, which were worn on certain occasions up until this century. As Lindegården (Linden Farm) is a 15th-century farm, the building provides a very fitting setting for the museum pieces.

A walk around the town is well worthwhile, and don't miss visiting what is probably Kalundborg's most idyllic street, Præstegade (Pastor Street). The late medieval houses in Adelgade are also worth seeing. Other historic buildings from the late Middle Ages could be seen in Koldilgade, Jernbanegade and Nygade, if a devastating fire in 1901 had not reduced entire blocks of houses to rubble. The fire was of such proportions that the Copenhagen Fire Brigade had to rush to the rescue in a special train. On September 24, a Neapolitan newspaper even reported that the entire island of Zealand was in flames, which of course turned out to be a slight exaggeration.

At the market, a memorial plaque marks the birthplace of Sigrid Undset, the Nordic writer and later Nobel laureate. Her best-known work was probably the successful novel Kristin Lavran's Daughter. The garden is the special attraction of the rococo castle Lerchenberg, about four kilometres south of Kalundborg. Not only is it one of the best-preserved 18th-century gardens in Denmark, it is also the largest rose garden in northern Europe. The castle itself houses collections from the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The castle is also a cultural hub, with many summer events.

In the wider Kalundborg area, attractions include Ulstrup Mill near the village of the same name on the Røsnæs headland. The painting work of the restored Dutch windmill from 1880 is in operation. The view alone is worth a detour to the mill hill.
