NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach is no problem during the day, it takes place directly from the fairway. A strong current must be expected. At night, an approach to the unlit harbour is also possible because of the proximity to the lit fairway.

Berths

At the head of the pier and the small, southeast adjacent sports boat basin are guest places on 2.5 - 3m water depth. Outside, however, you lie unprotected in the current, so lying there is only recommended in persistently calm weather. The ferry dock and the moorings behind the bridgehead should not be occupied by guest berths.

Surroundings

There are no catering facilities, but a café is 1 km away.

There is a ferry service to Snaptun.

NV Land Guide

This island is best known for its Viking ship burials. The stone ship settlements on the southeast side are up to eight metres long. According to traditions from the Middle Ages, the people of Hjarnø believed that King Hjarne was buried on the island with his army. Thus, the island was given the name Hjarnö (the island of Hjarnes). In any case, findings prove that Hjarnø was already inhabited in the Stone Age. The settlement is attributed to the special fertility of the soil. The ship settlements are almost completely overgrown and therefore difficult to find. It is advisable to let locals show you the way, and during the breeding season it is better to avoid visiting the ship graves altogether, as many bird species nest here.

One of Denmark's smallest churches stands on the pretty island at the entrance to Horsens Fjord. There are 130 inhabitants on the island today. Most of the islanders make a living from farming.

The island's former importance as an important observation post at the fjord entrance to Horsens is obvious. Today, there is nothing of this to be felt or seen. Rather, Hjarnø is a secluded spot for those seeking peace and quiet.

The island has excellent bathing beaches. Also worth mentioning is the view: On fine days, you can see all the way to Endelave from the southeast of the islet.

It only takes five minutes to take the ferry to Snaptun.
