Description

The only town on the island of Langeland with a commercial, fishing and a marina immediately south of the large connecting bridge to Tåsinge.

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach is possible day and night and takes place via the very well buoyed and lit "Rudkøbing Løb" fairway. However, you should be aware of the current, which at times is very strong across the entrance (for more information on the current, see NV. nautical chart p 12B).

Berths

Guests will find berths in the marina at 2 - 2.5m water depth. Large yachts are moored alongside the north-western breakwater or in the southern basin of the commercial harbour. The fishing harbour is not suitable for guest berths and the ferry harbour is closed to pleasure craft.

Surroundings

The nice, old town offers very good supply possibilities. Ferry to Strynø.

The island's capital is also Langeland's only town. In 1987 Rudkøbing celebrated the 700th anniversary of the granting of its town charter as a market town. The town and the market rights are older than 700 years, but in 1287 its privileges as a market town were verifiably confirmed. However, the trade monopoly 700 years ago did not suit many farmers and merchants on the island, because their business was going well without the privileged Rudkøbing. They did not see the point of having to sell and ship their goods in Rudkøbing. Why expose themselves to the dangers of the medieval town - expensive living, plague, cholera, famine, conflagrations - if there was no solid reason to do so? There were, after all, plenty of other ports through which to export one's goods: for example, Bagenkop and Lohals. The fact that it was forbidden, under penalty, to let business pass Rudkøbing did not bother the rural population much, especially as shipping in the monopoly port was more expensive than in the pirate ports.

The monopoly imposed from above probably also played a decisive role in the disputes between the supporters of the royal house and the North Schleswig ducal dynasty in the 13th century. In 1280, open warfare broke out between King Erik Klipping and his half-cousin, Duke Valdemar IV of North Schleswig. The duke was finally imprisoned in Søborg Castle and only released after he had sworn fealty. He probably did not mean it too seriously with the oath, because on 22 November 1286 the king was murdered by masked men in the village barn of Finderup. Although Reichsmarschall Stig and a number of other high-ranking nobles were found guilty of murder and outlawed, the main suspect, Waldemar, sat among the judges. He had, in fact, been offered the office of imperial steward by the king's dowager. As such, it was of course his "noblest"""" was to track down the murderers. As a result of the noble horse-trading that apparently took place behind the scenes, the widow succeeded in having her minor son Erik proclaimed king, and the imperial administrator Waldemar succeeded in underpinning Rudkøbing's privileges. On 29 September 1287, in the Knights' Hall at Tranekær Castle, Rudkøbing's town charter was confirmed.

The Langlanders proved united against the Swedes, who tried three times in vain to take the island during the war of 1658/59. However, the islanders felt the full fury of the attackers after the fourth attempt succeeded. Half of Rudkøkbing was destroyed. The town had already been so badly affected by fire 40 years earlier that it was permanently impoverished by the renewed destruction. Thus, even today it cannot boast of any castles or other magnificent buildings. It was only with the construction of the harbour in the 19th century that things started to look up again.

Although it lacks splendour and pageantry, Rudkøbing still has a town centre worth seeing with old half-timbered houses and merchants' houses. The dreamy old town includes the old pharmacy at Bogade 15 between the market and the harbour. Here you will find pharmacist's inventory from three centuries, all of which has been used on the spot. The contents that used to be in the drawers are admittedly less in demand today: dragon's blood, crab's eyes, thrust mummies or live leeches. In the listed garden near the pharmacy, medicinal herbs were grown for centuries.

The Langeland Museum of Cultural History at Jens Wintersvej 12 is dedicated to the history of the islands of Langeland and Strynø. The exhibition includes an extensive prehistoric collection, which is also the result of excavations on Langeland. When it comes to ancient finds, this museum is considered one of the best in Denmark. From the period after 1600, tasteful pieces of furniture from many of the island's manors are on display. From Viking graves come splendid silver-studded weapons and riding equipment.

Of course, the inviting building at Østergade 25 is of particular interest to sports boaters, as it houses a small fishing and nautical exhibition. Besides old fishing gear and fishermen's dinghies, the visual material deserves special attention. It includes a large number of old ship photographs and thus documents the early working conditions. Detailed reports describe the everyday life of the sailors, their leisure activities and their food. Also at Østergade 25, an exhibition at the Langeland Museum shows how people lived in the past. For example, a 17th-century-style living room can be seen.

In the middle of the town, between Smedegade in the north and Brogade in the south, lies Rudkøbing Church, which consists of a late Romanesque nave with a Gothic sacristy and late Gothic cross arm. Remains of a wall of unhewn boulders can be seen in the western part of the country house, probably the remains of the first church, which was probably built around 1100.

The construction of the Catholic church, established in 1925 in a converted burgher's house, is due to Polish foreign workers who came to Langeland at the beginning of the century to work in beet cultivation. The chapel's windows, which are well worth seeing, are glass mosaics with motifs from the story of Christ.

The large Rudkøbing town mill, built in 1820, belongs to a foundation set up to preserve it. The surrounding countryside can be seen from the mill hill.

Tullebølle lies between Rudkøbing and Tranekær and is the only Danish village with two well-preserved old windmills - Bjerreby Mill and Bagenbjerg Mill, which was still in use until 1981. With eleven preserved mills, Langeland is still a small millers' paradise. If you want to know more about the history of the mills, it is best to visit the mill museum in Tranekær Castle Mill (see Dageløkke). The village of Tullebølle has a church worth seeing and Tullebölle Kro, an old stagecoach inn.

For nature lovers, a hike or drive to Lindelse Nor south of Rudkøbing is recommended. A hiking trail leads from Lindelse via Bodden, Bogøvej, Langøvej and Kædabyvej.

From Rudkøbing there is a ferry to Strynø.
