Description

Capital of the island of Møn with commercial and marina harbour in the southeast of the bay of the same name.

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach is only recommended during the day for those unfamiliar with the area because of the unlit "Koster Rende". You sail through the buoyed dredging channel with a target depth of 4.1m or north of the island of Lindholm through the 2.4m deep "Nørdre Løb". For the opening of the bascule bridge, which delimits the inner harbour, contact the harbour master.

Berths

Near the city, guests will find plenty of space in the north harbour on 3m of water. The narrow marina is heavily occupied with local boats.

Surroundings

Very good supply possibilities (among others shipyard service in the inner harbour). A convenient starting point for interesting shore excursions on the island of Møn.

The island of Lindholm about 2sm northwest of Stege may not be entered. Here is a veterinary experimental station for foot and mouth disease.

NV Land Guide

Whoever puts up with the industrial facilities near the harbour and the four-mile journey through the Koster Channel is visiting a typical small Danish town. At least the location of the harbour offers the advantage of being close to the city compared to a sugar factory. The town, with its 4000 inhabitants, the largest on Møn, is also the best starting point for exploring the island.

Stege was built around the castle "Stegehus", which no longer exists and which Waldemar the Great had built around 1175. In 1247, Duke Knud of Blekinge was imprisoned in the castle by his half-brother, later King Erik Plogpenning. However, the Lübeckers managed to free the duke and capture the castle in 1252 with the help of the knight Heinrich Ämeltorp. A moat and a wall with three city gates were built around the city in the 14th century. Tree-covered parts of the rampart can still be found in the north of the island metropolis, and the remaining town gate in Storegade is, along with Faaborg Gate, the only surviving medieval town gate in Denmark. In the adjacent buildings you will find the particularly richly equipped "Møns Museum", which was opened in 1913 as the first regional museum in Denmark. In more than 20 rooms, cultural history from antiquity to the present day is on display. The main building of the museum is an old merchant's yard, the "Empiregården" from the year 1813.

Among other things, traditional costumes, old household items, historical photos and pieces from the earlier days of seafaring can be seen here. Among the most notable exhibits are finds from the island's prehistory and early history. For example, fossils from the chalk cliffs of Klintholm are on display. The history of Møn's peasants, who have been subject to numerous domestic and foreign attacks over the years, is also highlighted.

As an outpost of the island kingdom, Møn was an early target of freebooters from Baltic countries. During the Swedish Wars, the island was left open to plunder several times and the peasants had to bear the burden of quartering the Danish mounted guards.

The herring markets made the town rich. Ships sailing to the markets in Skanør and Falsterbo passed through Stege, whose inhabitants there owned almost a third of the fish stalls in Skanør. With the disappearance of the herring markets in the 16th century, the town became impoverished. The population dropped from 2500 to 700.

St Hans Church, built in 1250, is one of the oldest buildings in the town. It is best known for its lime paintings. The museum yard at Skullebjergvej 15 in Keldbylille, five kilometres east of Stege, presents many exhibits (mainly furniture) from the 20th century.

The Kong Asgers Hoj passage tomb is the largest of its kind in Denmark. If you want to visit it from the inside, don't forget your flashlight. However, the distance to the grave, located in the southwest of the island, is almost ten kilometers. It is therefore advisable to hire a bicycle. By bicycle, it is also easier to go around the big noor of Stege. And if you are already at the eastern tip of the Noor, you should also pay a visit to the church of Elmelunde. The "Elmelundemeister" was named after it, as the impressive lime paintings on the vaults were made by him (see also Fanefjord Church, Hårbølle). If you are not going by boat to the other harbours on the island, you should visit the sights of these harbours by bicycle. A trip to the Ulvshale nature reserve (see Nyord) is also a good way to do this.
