NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the unlit harbour is possible during the day. From the south buoy of the Arnager Rev one runs first to the north until the harbour is bearing 300°. From here you then stay well clear of the Arnager Rev and steer to the harbour entrance at a water depth of 3 - 6 m with 300°.

Berths

Only a few yachts can moor at the quay or go alongside with the fishermen. The water depth is 1.5 - 2.2m.

BAKKERNE BÅDEHAVN (no plan): This small boat harbour east of Arnager is not suitable for pleasure boats with water depths below 1m.

Surroundings

Limited supplies can be found at the village grocer. Basic sanitary facilities and a kiosk are available at the car park. There is no fresh water at the harbour.

NV Land Guide

The small, shallow harbour of Arnager is only visited by a few yachts, but can be recommended as a travel stop because of the cosy village. Occasional disturbances by the nearby airport between Rønne and Arnager, however, must be accepted.

In the village is a smokehouse of the locals claim that it is the best on Bornholm. If you eat a kipper here on the terrace, you can also enjoy the sea view.

For amber seekers and amateur geologists, the limestone slopes of Arnager are just as much a treasure trove as they are for archaeologists. Time and again, fossils from prehistoric times are found here.

North of the village, a large passage grave can be visited, and near Vasegård lies a stone with petroglyphs.

In 1937, skeletal remains were found when the passage grave was restored, suggesting that the burial site had been a centre for funeral ceremonies. The bowl-shaped depressions on some of the capstones date from the Bronze Age (1800 - 500 BC).

A trip to the Almindingen State Forest (ten kilometres to the northwest), which was established in 1842 and has several small lakes, is definitely worthwhile. Here is also the highest elevation of the island, the 162-meter-high Rytterknægten. From a lookout tower here you have an excellent panoramic view.

Two kilometres northeast of the lookout point is the Lilleborg Ruin, Bornholm's most important fortification along with Hammerhus. It stands on a nearly 20-metre-high cliff above the partially dried-up Lake Borre and once belonged to King Christopher I, who was at feud with the powerful Archbishop of Lund.

The archbishop owned three-quarters of the island, the king the rest. The royal possessions were a thorn in the side of the clergyman until his ally, Prince Jarimar of Rügen, captured and destroyed the castle. Lilleborg is said to have been the first castle in the Danish Empire to feature stained glass windows.

Gamleborg, not to be confused with the ruins of the same name in the Paradise Hills, is a Viking-era refuge castle built on a cliff, located a kilometre southeast of Lilleborg. Not much is left of the castle, however.

Four kilometres north of Arnager stands the three-storey Nylars Kirke. It is the best preserved of Bornholm's four round churches. This is especially true of the defences of the church, which was built in the 12th century. In addition, a window opening has been preserved that is thought to have been of this size in other round churches. At 52 by 27 centimetres, it is just small enough for a person to squeeze through. The defenders obviously did not want to take the slightest risk. There are two rune stones in the armory of the church. One is erected by a son for his father, who drowned with his ship's crew. The other is dedicated to a brother who fell in battle.

In Aakirkeby, nine kilometres northeast of Arnager, the church is particularly worth seeing. The altar and a Roman baptismal font are the jewels of the place of worship. Although the village is one of the oldest on Bornholm, not much old remains because wars, plague and fires destroyed large parts of the town and decimated the population. In 1509 and 1510 the town was razed to the ground by the Hanseatic League. In 1535, an army of peasants revolted against the Lübeckers. But the peasants were defeated.
