Description

Protected by two breakwaters, the entrance to Karrebæk Fjord in the north of the Smålands fairway has a commercial quay and two yacht facilities.

The approach to the fired harbour is possible day and night. The white church and the holiday complex at the harbour with their large red roofs are conspicuous. You have to be aware of the strong current at times, which can be up to 4kn in stormy winds and makes entering and leaving the harbour practically impossible. In calm weather the current capsizes about every 6 hours. The inner part of the harbour and the Karrebæk Fjord can be accessed through the bascule bridge.

Bridge opening is every hour on the hour from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset (max. in the period from 05:00 to 21:00). In case of strong winds (10-12m/s) an opening on demand is possible after consultation with the bridge watch (VHF channel 12/16 or tel. +45 55 44 20 45).

Berths

Guest boats are moored at 2.5m water depth at Næstved Sejlklub's Marina Inderhavn . Large yachts can also moor at the Handelskai (5 - 6m water depth). However, there is a very strong swell here when there is a strong west-southwest wind. It is better to moor east of the bascule bridge on the south shore at a water depth of approx. 3.5m.

Surroundings

The seaside resort offers some supply facilities. Fuel is available at Marina Søfronten.

The small fishing and trading village is so overrun with tourists in the summer that you have to close both eyes to still talk about a cosy fishing village. The village and its surroundings are a recreation area for the town of Næstved, the largest town in the south of Zealand. Karrebæksminde is therefore difficult to enjoy during the high season.

However, as far as the old fishermen's houses and avenues are concerned, there is no denying the idyllic nature of the village in Karrebæk Bay.

Karrebæksminde used to be a port for Næstved until the town became a port town itself 50 years ago when the canal was built. Before that, barges transported goods transshipped in the fishing village on the little river Susau all the way to Næstved. At the time of the canal construction Karrebæksminde got its most popular photo motif, the bascule bridge. It connects the village of 500 souls with the island of Enø. The antiquated steel structure has become the village's landmark. It opens and closes with amazing speed. From a café terrace right by the bridge, you can see the impressive mechanics for yourself over a slice of cake with a view of the steel structure.

Near the café stands the leaning "Pandekagehuset" (pancake house), once the little customs house of Karrebæksminde. A few metres away, an old winch has been erected, which was once used to tar the fishermen's nets. The typical facilities of a holiday resort - cottages, a huge car park, camping sites, cafeterias, mini-golf courses, discotheques, inns etc. - are available, as well as a post office and a bank. There is also a ceramics workshop and a small candle factory here.

By walking to the eastern tip of Enø (Enø Overdrev), you escape the tourist crowds. Birds such as the oystercatcher, avocet and eider goose can be seen around this uninhabited headland.

One of the sights in the area is Karrebæk Church. For the rest, the area around the village, which is dominated by holiday homes, is poor in terms of cultural history.
