NV Land Guide

Sights are few and far between around the bleak Malmö suburban port of Lomma. Warehouses and apartment blocks dominate the picture at the port of the Malmö suburb (see also Malmö). All the more reason to visit the small town of Lund, ten kilometres northeast of the marina. For some time during the Middle Ages, this cosy town was the largest city in Scandinavia and the intellectual centre of Sweden. The imposing building of the former episcopal seat of Lomma is the cathedral with its twin towers, built around the year 1000, which, however, has been heavily altered several times. Its special features are the tombs in the crypt, the choir stalls from the 15th century and the astronomical clock from the 14th century, which is well worth seeing. Between the dial and the calendar of the great clock, the Magi appear at 12 noon to present their gifts to Mary. In the north portal of the cathedral, the scene "David fighting the lion," can be seen. The Romanesque building is considered one of the most beautiful in the entire north. The first boom of the city around 1020 was caused by the Danish king Knut the Great, when he had a coin minted here. Afterwards, the rise and fall of Lund was closely linked to the prosperity and decline of the Catholic Church in Scandinavia. In 1060 Lund became a bishop's see, and in 1103 an archbishop's see. There were seven monasteries and 27 churches here, apart from the cathedral church in the 14th century. After the Reformation and the annexation of Skaane (Skåne) to Sweden, the city became impoverished and did not develop into a lively university town again until the 18th and 19th centuries. With the tactical founding of the university (1868), the Swedes were keen to secure their new possession intellectually and politically.

An entire city quarter is taken up between St Anne's and Adelgatan by the Museum of Cultural History (Tegnerplatsen), one of Sweden's largest open-air museums. In more than 30 buildings you can see old furniture, costumes, ceramics and art. Craftsmen's courtyards, town houses and old merchants' shops also make "Kulturen" one of the country's most beautiful open-air museums.

The university's history museum at Kraftstorg 1 displays archaeological collections from Skaane (Skåne) as well as medieval art. The center of Lund is open only to buses and bicycles. Bicycles seem to be the main mode of transport in the student city. There are hundreds of them at specially arranged parking places. Near the village of Barsebäck (20 kilometres west of Lund) lies the Gillhög passage grave, the best preserved and most accessible Stone Age grave in the region. Scientists assume that it was a burial place used by a clan for generations. It is also thought to have been a place of worship and sacrifice. The finds from the grave, which is around 4000 years old, were made in 1931 and are on display at the Lund History Museum.
