Description

This fishing and pleasure boat harbour is a popular stopover on the way to Sweden's south east coast.

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the lit harbour is possible day and night via a buoyed channel in the bearing of the leading light (2 Q.R) at 249.5°.

During the day the triangular beacons are difficult to make out, you should keep the windmill and the middle of the harbour entrance on bearing. After passing the pier heads, turn to starboard into the marina, taking note of the unlit concrete blocks in the outer harbour.

In strong winds, strong cross currents can occur off the entrance. In onshore gale force winds, expect heavy bottom seas off the harbor, making entry and exit impossible.

Berths

Guests will find enough places in the marina at piers D and E at 1.6 - 2.5m water depth. This is indicated at the pontoons. Large yachts can moor at the quay in the western fishing harbour at 4 - 5m water depth.

Surroundings

All utilities and a customs office are available in the cosy village. Slip and repair possibilities at the fishing port. In addition to good sanitary facilities, there are also coin-operated washing machines in the clubhouse at the marina.

The cobbled main street (Storgatan) winds its way up from the harbour into the town, where narrow streets cross each other. White, small or delicately coloured 18th- and 19th-century fishermen's and craftsmen's houses characterise the milieu in the old part of the harbour town of 25,000. They stand close together and in some you can touch the gutter with your outstretched hand.

The streetscape with coffee gardens spreads a cosy atmosphere. In other words, it's worth the sea voyage to Simrishamn. Stora Rådmansgatan, for example, which runs parallel to the main street, is considered one of the most beautiful streets in Skåne.

The town, which owes its development in part to the Hanseatic League and the large herring catches, was first mentioned in 1123. "Svimraos" was the name given to the place at that time, which probably meant "slow-flowing stream". During the 12th century Simrishamn was still overshadowed by the rich town of "Tumathorp", ten kilometres further inland. Then the Hanseatic League came and bought the herring by the shipload right away.

Fish is still a significant source of livelihood today (see also Skillinge). The fish processing industry exports mainly cod and herring. The lively fishing port is evidence of a flourishing trade. In the inns, eel and herring are among the specialities.

The main street (Storgatan) used to divide the town into two halves. While the craftsmen lived on the north side, the south side was reserved for fishermen and day labourers. Especially worth seeing houses from this time before the turn of the century are the Kockskahof and the Bergenska Gården at the Stora Torget (Big Market). A few steps away, the aged buildings by the church are also worth a look.

Dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, St Nicolai's Church was built in the 12th century and extended in the 13th. Votive ships and a 13th-century baptismal font adorn the interior.

The church tower, built in the 15th century, was and still is an important sea mark. The statue in front of the church is called "The Sisters"' and is by the well-known American-Swedish artist Carl Milles.

Towering over western Simrishamn on Simrisvägen is the town's landmark and aid to to navigation, the old Södra Kvarn windmill. Also worth a visit is the Österlens Museum at Stortorget, housed in a large granary dating from 1848. Cultural history and archaeology can be seen here on four floors. Among the exhibition themes are, of course, fishing and seafaring.

The Tannery Museum in Strömens Strädde reminds us that Simrishamn was once a centre of the leather industry. The old editorial office of the "Cimbrishamnsbladet" can be found in the Handwerksloftet, where also former handicraft tools are exhibited.

Sights in the area are the rock carvings at Järrestad, the king's grave and the Glimmingehus (see Skillinge). Although the distance to the King's Tomb (northwest of Simrishamn) is almost 20 kilometres, it is worth the journey. A powerful ruler was buried here 3000 years ago at great expense. Not only the size of the tomb is impressive, but also the images immortalized on stones in the burial chamber: sun wheels, horses and chariots line the tomb. The symbols are "snapshots" of the king's life. The tomb is considered one of the most important antiquities in the entire north.

There is no shortage of barrows around Simrishamn, including the imposing Bronze Age burial mound "Kvesjahög" on the hill north of the road connecting Simrishamn and Järrestad (five kilometres southwest). A kilometre north of Järrestad, on the road to Gladsax, are a large number of pre-Christian rock carvings depicting, among other things, snakes and a human.

The church at Simris, immediately south of Simrishamn, is perhaps the most beautiful church in Österlen County, with its vaults and the remains of a single pore. Its location also contributes to this. From Simris Hill you have a view of the countryside and the sea for miles.

For those who don't have the opportunity to take their own boat to Bornholm, there are fast hydrofoil connections in Simrishamn.

Ziemlich mieser Service.
