NV Land Guide
The old fishing village with picturesque streetscape already existed in the times of the migration of peoples. Fish, supplied to monasteries and castles in the hinterland, was the livelihood during the Middle Ages. The harbour, which occasionally also hosts Soviet ships, is still a lively fishing port. The fish is mainly delivered to the exporting fishing industry. In addition, a highly regarded fishing fair is held here every year. In short: In Skillinge, people are tuned from head to toe to fish - or at least to seafaring.
The more than 100 pictures and numerous model ships in the maritime museum, the Skillinge Municipalhus, show that the development of the village and seafaring were closely connected. Skillinge was the home port for each of the ships shown here. Even the name of the "Seafarer's Chapel" indicates that everything here had to do with fish or seafaring.
About five kilometres northwest of Skillinge stands Glimmingehus, an authentic piece of the Middle Ages. It is the oldest secular building and also the only castle preserved in its original form. It was built in 1499 for the Danish Imperial Councillor Jens Holgersen and surrounded by a mighty moat.
The building with its almost two-and-a-half-metre-thick walls is also the subject of the story of "Nils Holgersson's Wondrous Journey" by children's author Selma Lagerlöf. A small museum and café stand right by the castle.
The blacksmith museum of Gislöf (about five kilometres from Skillinge) has been housed there in the old village school.
