NV Land Guide

It is claimed that the most beautiful beaches in Denmark are located here. Judging by the summer tourist flow, this claim can not be taken out of the air. Tourism is almost the only source of income. Camping sites and hotels dominate the picture. Thousands of summer houses stretch for many kilometres around the former fishing village, which has experienced more tranquil days. Danish cosiness can only be spoken of in the old town centre - and only in the low season. During the summer season, the number of 1500 inhabitants is exceeded many times over by the numerous guests.

The fact that Ålbæk has a number of positive aspects despite the tourist rush during the main holiday season is mainly due to the worthwhile excursion destinations. For example, there is the 40-metre-high "Raabjerg Mile", a shifting sand dune that is unique in Denmark and can be found four kilometres to the northwest (see also Skagen). It moves more than ten metres eastwards every year. The piece of desert even once served as a backdrop for western films. The impressive sand mountain threatens another unique natural experience through its migration: the state-owned "Bunken Klitplantage" to the east of Ålbæk. It was created 100 years ago to stop the sandstorms. The sand threatened to bury some residential areas on the Vendsyssel headland. So only the shifting sand dune is still allowed to wander where it wants and gnaws eagerly at the clit plantation. On the other hand, the dune warden and his staff take strict care that visitors only walk through the area on the established paths. The rods are signposted in different colours. Adjacent to the plantation are other dune plantations typical of North Jutland. The "Bunken Klitplantage" consists mostly of the hardy mountain fir. Many of these firs, even where they are barely more than a metre high, are as old as the plantation.

The forest lakes with resting places, which have also been artificially created, are idyllic spots in the overgrown dune landscape where the rare ant bugs can be seen hunting ants. The beetles dig a pit for their victim and prevent it from leaving the trap by throwing sand at it.

The kings of the air can be seen in the eagle reserve at Tuen on the route between Tversted and Ålbæk. The feeding of the golden eagles is certainly not for the faint-hearted, but the flight displays of the white-tailed eagles are not to be missed. The Wenzel couple have succeeded in getting the majestic birds to breed here. The photo exhibition on the eagle and falcon species alone is worth a visit.

If the journey is not too far, a visit to the aquarium in Hirtshals, 20 kilometres east of Ålbæk, is recommended, where around 100 creatures from the North Sea and Baltic can be observed through viewing windows. On the way there, a detour to Mygdal will take you to Højer's amber-cutting workshop, which is open all year round from 9am to 6pm.

Bindslev Church, ten kilometres southwest of Ålbæk, is considered one of the most beautiful medieval churches in the country. A special attraction inside is a Madonna painted in the 12th century.
