NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the harbour is possible day and night via the buoyed and lit channel-like fairway. Those unfamiliar with the area must keep a good headlamp clear because of the unlit buoys.

Berths

The north harbour offers berths for guests in the marina at a water depth of approx. 2 m by arrangement with the fixed berth holders. Guest berths with large yachts can be found in the innermost part of the north basin, on the northern quay, by arrangement with the harbour master.

Surroundings

At the marina there are good sanitary facilities in the clubhouse as well as fresh water.  In the village itself you will find very good supply possibilities.

NV Land Guide

The hectic bustle of the sixth largest city in Denmark contrasts with the idyll of the fjord. The busy traffic of merchant ships, however, gives you a heads up on your journey through the narrow fjord. The industrial city consists of a confusion of different buildings. Industrial buildings stand next to half-timbered houses, shopping centres alternate with historical buildings and modern office buildings. From this point of view, Randers, which has a population of over 50,000, is a victim of its convenient location, which has led to such rapid development that the old structures have had to suffer as a result. As late as 1960, historic preservation in Randers experienced black hours when numerous 18th-century houses were demolished.

The town grew up at the mouth of the Gudenaa, considered Denmark's largest river. A few kilometres from Randers it joins the little river Nørreaa, swelling into a considerable stream by Danish standards. A ferry station was the origin of Randers. It made the town an important traffic junction. Its special importance is underlined by the minting of a royal coin around 1080. Around 1300, King Erik Menved granted the town city rights, documenting the town's important role in the Danish kingdom. During the Middle Ages, several monasteries were founded.

The Holy Ghost House on Erik Menved Plads was one of these monasteries and also a hospital and old people's home until the Reformation. Today the house serves, among other things, as a museum and is also a tourist office.

The street behind the Heiligengeisthaus is a good example of how crowded Randers once was. Military and ecclesiastical facilities took precedence over private development in the Middle Ages. On the town hall square to the east of it, the roads from the east, west and north met from time immemorial. From here, the "Vasen" a meadow path led down to the ford and ferry square, where a bridge was built over the Gudenå around the year 1000.

On the west side of the market square stands the oldest stone house in the town, built in 1468, and on the east side the town hall, built in 1778. Niels Ebbesen, immortalized as a statue in the square, is considered Randers' first freedom fighter. The old houses of the Nygade north of the town hall fell victim to the "city redevelopment". Here, where the Jews used to live - still stands a 15th century half-timbered house at Nygade 4. It is said to be the oldest half-timbered building in Randers. There is a lot of talk in the tourist brochure about where historic buildings once stood - but what good is it to the visitor. So, unfortunately, almost all of the old houses in Torvegade have disappeared.

The story of salmon fishing is a similarly sad one. As recently as the 18th century, so many salmon were caught in the Randers river that the fish was considered a poor man's meal. The catch declined rapidly after dams blocked the salmon's path to spawning grounds.

Admission to the culture house at Østervolds is free. It houses the cultural history museum with exhibitions from ancient times to more recent times. There are also three famous town parlours from around 1900 with paintings by Dürer and Rembrandt and, one floor up, numerous paintings by well-known Danish painters.

Randers has a name as a shopping town. There are numerous cafés where you can take a break from the stress of shopping.

Nice places to visit are Fussingø Forest by Lake Fussing, twelve kilometres west of Randers, and Fladbro Forest, where there is an arched footbridge over the little river Nørreå that is well worth seeing. Hiking maps are available at the tourist office in Randers.
