NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the Mariagerfjord, which is lit by directional lights, should only be made by those unfamiliar with the area during the day. The pier is approached directly from the fairway. Be aware of the strong current at times.

Berths

The 10 m wide bridgehead with a water depth of 2-2.5 m may be used by guest berth holders for short periods. The western part of the jetty is reserved for the pilot boat and must remain free. The small jetties west of the bridgehead with water depths less than 0.5 m are reserved for recreational fishing boats.

Anchorage:
Just southwest of the harbour you will find a good anchorage behind the southern fairway. Here you can also find mooring buoys of the Danish Sailing Association.

Surroundings

At the scenic harbor, there are no utilities other than very basic sanitary facilities, including no drinking water.

NV Land Guide

The patched-up huts and the aged barges of the part-time fishermen lend a quaint atmosphere to the small settlement at the entrance to the Mariagerfjord. The fishing milieu with the jetty in need of repair, the shallow water on both sides of the fairway and the flat shore zones with the reed fields and the suddenly rising forest belt would be the perfect backdrop for a film set in a lonely landscape á la Huckleberry Finn. With your trouser legs rolled up, you can walk from the edge of the fairway to the land and sail right past grazing cows and horses, whose pastures extend far into the fjord.

Although the fjord delivers what the "calling card" Als Odde at the entrance to the fjord promises, only a few German sports boaters decide to make a detour into the inlet and even fewer stop off in Als Odde. The reason is obvious: If the wind is very strong, it becomes uncomfortable. In addition, at the lonely fishermen's settlement one must do without supply possibilities completely. The next grocery store is a four-kilometre walk to the northwest. It is located in the village of Helberskov, which has existed for 6000 years. Findings attest to the astonishing age of the settlement, which is worth seeing and was first mentioned in written records in 1290. Because Helberskov was too far away from the main traffic arteries, development has literally passed this gem by. An abundance of old half-timbered houses are the tranquil result of Helberskov's slumber. The oldest half-timbered house, "Østergård", dates from 1727.

The inhabitants were awakened from their "sleep" by the holidaymakers who have set up their domiciles in the wooded settlement between the jetty and Helberskov. Helberskov is on the route of a highly recommended bicycle tour, which is described in more detail at Hadsund (see map there).

The small village of Als, which according to its name actually belongs to the Als Odde jetty, lies seven kilometres north of the entrance to the fjord. Despite the long walk, two things in particular make a visit to the village worthwhile: the church and the museum. Once a landmark for seafarers, the church, perched on a hill on Kirkevej, towers above the other houses, providing an excellent view of the sea and landscape. In summer, the church is usually open to visitors.

The local museum is housed in a dwelling dating from 1850. In the seven rooms of the old building, household goods, furniture and farming implements from the old days provide the authentic atmosphere of a former leasehold house in southeastern Himmerland.

It remains to mention that on the way to Helberskov you pass Dommergården (Judge's Farm), where handicrafts are on display. Along the way is also the small inn Jægerhuset.

The spires, which can be seen on the port side as you continue into the fjord, belong to Overgård Castle, but this can only be visited from land, preferably from Hadsund.
