NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the fired harbour is possible day and night. After passing the island of Nekselø to the north, you walk directly to the harbour entrance. To the west of the harbour, a shallow, rocky reef extends to Nekselø Island. There is no passage here.

Berths

Guests can berth in free boxes at the jetties or at the quays in the western harbour basin by arrangement with the harbour master. The water depth is 2.5 - 3 m. The ferry pier in the eastern part of the harbour may not be occupied by yachts.

Surroundings

In the small village you will find some shopping facilities. Fuel and repair services are offered directly at the harbour. There are ferry connections to Sejerø and Nekselø. NEKSELØ Jetty: The jetty is exclusively for the mail boat and local fishing boats. There are no moorings for guests. The island is also a nature reserve.

NV Land Guide

Although the harbour has sufficient guest berths, only 300 to 400 pleasure craft visit it each year, mainly due to its position away from the main routes in Nekselø Bay. There are no other reasons for not visiting Havnsø. The village, which stretches along the harbour road with some small-scale industry, holiday homes and little old building stock, may not be a pearl, but it is not the opposite either and exudes a certain charm.

In lovingly preserved lettering is still written on the façade of the merchant's shop at the harbour: "Kolonial og Skibshandel" - as if the merchant wanted to tell the visitor: Nothing will change here so quickly, because the mills grind slowly here. In fact, however, the windmill built in 1822 at the western end of the village no longer grinds at all. But in the outbuilding, where the miller may once have stored his flour, the billiard ball rolls and the keg beer flows. Apart from this half-timbered kro and a hotel-restaurant, there is the "Steakhouse Nordwest" (with a small terrace) and a snack bar next to it. The local fishmonger is based in a corrugated iron building right by the harbour. The two ferries bring some life into the scenery. One departs for Sejerø (an hour's journey), the other for the nearby island of Nekselø. However, the ferry traffic is very modest. The only sight worth mentioning in the area is Dragsholm Manor, about four kilometres to the northeast. The tourist guide to the Odsherred countryside describes a visit to the castle as an "absolute must".

After all, guided tours are organised at Dragsholm, which also tell of the castle's most prominent resident, the Earl of Bothwell, who was known as a womaniser in the 16th century. After marrying Mary Stuart, he had to flee from the Scots after her death, which led him to Denmark, where he first sat behind bars in Malmöhus Fortress and eventually ended his life as a prisoner at Dragsholm Castle. Since then, it is said, he has served as a reminder to womanizers in the Odsherred area ("You'll end up like the Earl..."). And it's easy to imagine what that means when you catch sight of the cellar room that is said to have been his dungeon.

If you still don't let these bleak prospects deter you from visiting the former state prison, don't miss the art exhibition in the castle. In addition, the drawing rooms are full of antiques (Dragsholm is open daily between 11am and 5pm from 20 July to early August).

Not far from the castle, you can learn at Faarevejle's Odsherreds Museum that a shallow fjord once lay between Dragsholm and Nykøbing on the Isefjord, now the dammed Lammefjord. Other themes include a pilot whale beached at Asnæs in 1863, the history of farmers and craftsmen and, of course, Bothwell's JarI.

The jetty at Nekselø Island is exclusively for the mail boat and fishing boats.
