Description

Small fishing and pleasure boat harbour on the south-western shore of Roskilde Fjord.

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the harbour is only recommended for those unfamiliar with the area during the day. From the shallow buoy "Ægholm", steer west to the designated passage at "Nørre Rev". The buoyage and the small fire are difficult to see, as they are surrounded by set nets. Behind the channel with a target depth of 4 m you steer with 330° to the harbour.

Berths

The small harbour basin is very busy with local boats. In calm weather, however, you can moor well on the outside of the eastern breakwater at 2 m water depth.

Surroundings

The cozy harbor offers basic sanitary facilities and limited utilities.

NV Land Guide

This tiny harbour with a water depth of 1.5 metres is unfortunately mostly occupied, so guests either have to go alongside a cutter or use the outer pier, which is uncomfortable in strong easterly winds. The nets and boats of the recreational fishermen determine the picture around the few berths as well as the "Gershøj Kro", whose guests enjoy an excellent view over harbour and fjord.

Also the small village situated on a hill with a row of old thatched houses and a beautiful church leaves nothing to be desired in terms of tranquillity. The old structures are better preserved than in most places on Roskilde- and Isefjord with their often oversized holiday home areas. There is a petrol station and a grocery store.

Worth seeing is the extremely well-maintained Krabbesholm Manor, two kilometres northwest of Gershøj. A special feature of the manor house and its outbuildings are the almost black roof tiles, which look as if they have been painted, making the roof appear as a highly polished surface when exposed to the sun. The manor is privately owned and unfortunately can only be viewed from the road.

Selsø, a fantastically beautiful anchorage with a small jetty, is one of those destinations commonly referred to as a "real insider's tip". However, since it is a near destination for Roskilder sailors, we unfortunately have to delete the "secret". Nevertheless, it remains a three-star tip for anchors - and you will rarely meet German sports sailors in Bredvig, north of Gershøj.

North of the bay, a narrow road embankment separates the bay from Lake Selsø, a protected, reed-covered body of water that serves as a breeding ground for many birds.

Over the lake rises Selsø Church (a kilometre from the jetty) and another 300 metres to the east, on the Hornsherred promontory, stands one of Denmark's oldest manors, Selsø Castle, restored in 1973. It can be visited at weekends and weekdays (1-5 pm) and contains Denmark's oldest manor kitchen, a fireplace room furnished with wooden benches. The Knight's Hall and neighbouring rooms are still as they were when they were furnished in 1730. Other rooms have remained unchanged since 1800, which may be due to the fact that no "lordship" has lived at Selsø Castle for over 170 years. Marbled wall panels 5 metres high, large Versailles mirrors, French wallpaper and huge paintings by Henrik Krock are among the old furnishings. The contrast is provided by sparse servants' quarters. Old domestic and agricultural tools are on display in the cellar. And in the porch house you can see a former dungeon where recalcitrant farmers were once locked up.

The church already mentioned can also be visited. Among its sights is an altarpiece from 1605 with noble coats of arms.

Before heading back to your boat, you should stroll through the castle's beautiful park - and if there's time, take a look at the Selsø Gallery, a kilometre north of the church.

There are few houses around Selsø Anchorage. If you want to get supplies, you have to go to the village of Skibby, two kilometres west.
