Description

Small commercial harbor used mostly by pleasure boats, with a large marina added to the west.

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the fired harbour is possible day and night. It takes place from Nykøbing Bay via a buoyed 3.3 m deep fairway leading to the commercial harbour. Immediately in front of the 9-roof building the fairway branches off to the old harbour. As the buoys are not fired, a spotlight must be kept clear at night. A landmark that can be seen from afar is the 9-Dächer-Haus at the Handelshafen.

Berths

Guests will find enough space in the old as well as in the new marina. The water depth in the old harbour is 2 - 3m.

Surroundings

At the harbour there are hardly any service facilities apart from sanitary facilities and a bunker station. In the village, however, you will find good shopping facilities.

NV Land Guide

The most striking building at the berths, located a good kilometre south of the town centre, is the large granary. The loading of the grain occasionally brings a little commotion to the quiet harbour. A fishmonger, a smokehouse and a ceramics shop also occupy the spacious harbour area of this small Zeeland town, which boasts a pedestrian zone, two museums, a cultural centre, even a section of the former Berlin Wall and the "Sommerland Sjælland" theme park.

The latter, however, is located five kilometres south of the town and its facilities are aimed mainly at customers of primary school age. The operators tout "60 different amusements" and advertise a water slide, aqua park, electric cars, bouncy cushions, canoeing, a cafeteria, restaurant, the Odsherred Jernbane private railway station and more.

The Odsherred Museum at Kirkestræde 12 is devoted to recent local and prehistoric history, with the standout exhibit being the "sun chariot" found in the Trundholm bog. This cult chariot was discovered by a farmer ploughing in 1902, or rather its individual parts. The reconstruction work resulted in a bronze group of such high archaeological value that the original was "confiscated" by the National Museum in Copenhagen. It is one of the most important finds of the Bronze Age in Denmark, which has caused a sensation both as a cult object and as an object of art. It consists of a gilded disc on a six-wheeled chariot wheel and a horse, the disc symbolising the sun. Bronze Age people worshipped the sun as the main deity and believed it was pulled across the sky by a horse. Historians suggest that the sun chariot was thrown into the bog as an offering to the gods.

A wide variety of tools from times past are also on display. Among other things, the products and equipment of the saddle maker and cooper show the development of the craft. The utensils of an old merchant's shop date back to the days around the turn of the last century. Grandmother's medicinal and spice herbs are grown in the museum's garden, where there is also an old fire engine.

The second museum, with the so-called Anneberg glass collection, can be found as follows: From Nykøbing, drive south on Egebergvej and after two kilometres you will reach the Anneberg Stræde turn-off, where the unique antique glasses and porcelain items can be seen in the museum on the right. The private collection is considered the largest in Europe.

Another three museums in the vicinity of Nykøbing make the choice difficult. Unfortunately, the particularly interesting Museum of Høve is located 15 kilometres southwest of Nykøbing, on the other side of the peninsula on Sejerø Bay. Among the prehistoric exhibits is the 6400-year-old skeleton of a bull aurochs, which was a proud 1.9 metres tall at the shoulder when it was alive and died from an arrowhead. The bog find belongs to the late Maglemosis culture (7500 - 6000 BC), a hunter culture of which nothing has been found except a few weapon remains. The people of this culture probably lived in coastal settlements, which today are covered by the rising sea.

The museum in Stenstrup is located about halfway between Odden Havn and Nykøbing, eight kilometres west of the moorings. As part of the exhibition on prehistoric cultures in Odsherred County, visitors here are given suggested tours of prehistoric monuments.

Also on display are a collection of traditional costumes and a historic farmhouse and schoolroom. Information is also provided about the passage grave at Stenstrup.

On the route to the museum after Stenstrup, three kilometres west of Nykøbing, lies the thoroughly researched Næsholm Castle ruins - built in 1240 and destroyed again just 100 years later. Of the 50-metre-long pile bridge that once reached the castle, the pile stumps in front of the castle hill can still be seen in the meadow area. Although only the remains of the inner defence tower have been preserved, the finds on display in the museums are impressive. Candlesticks, game pieces, dice and scissors for shearing sheep bear witness to the living habits of the castle inhabitants - and 300 crossbows to their fighting habits. Incidentally, the Danes themselves destroyed the castle, which was owned by a Holstein count at the time.

For the sake of completeness, we should also mention the Odsherred Museum in Faarevejle, some 20 kilometres away. However, the exhibition about the damming of the Lammefjord is accessible from Havnsø (see there) considerably faster to reach.

Without a bicycle, you will hardly have the time to visit the many sights - nor will you get to see the beautiful village of Klingt. The idyllic spot, six kilometres northwest of Nykøbing, lies on the Kattegat bay Nyrup and would be an excellent sailing destination if the small harbour hadn't silted up.

There is also Nykøbing's cultural centre, the "Pakhuset", which is mainly a forum for art exhibitions. For those who are not interested in such culture and prefer to loll around in the sun, the outdoor swimming pool of Nykøbing in A. Ladingsvej is recommended.

There are two ways to save even more time on your excursions in the county of Odsherred. Either rent a car or take to the skies at Trundholm airfield near Højby (about five kilometres southwest) to see the landscape from above. Those who moor in Nykøbing in mid-July can experience even more. That's when the "Asphalt Ball" takes place and the town becomes one big fairground.
