NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

Accessing all four ports is straightforward during the day. However, beware of the bridge piers that have been blown off. Searchlights must be used at night. A high-voltage power line (H=27m) spans the river to the west of the bridge remains. The entrance to the harbor is narrow and cross-setting currents may be present at times.

Berths

The water hiking rest area west of the bridge remains with 2m on the outside and 1 - 1.4m water depth in the harbor basin. Water, electricity and sanitary facilities are available.

The idyllic surroundings invite you to take long walks.

NV Land Guide

The marina at Karnin, a scenic spot, has retained a certain charm from days gone by. What's more, absolute peace and quiet is guaranteed as long as the bridge connection to the other shore is not rebuilt. Once celebrated as a technical marvel, the 600 m long Karnin lift bridge was blown up by an SS commando in the final days of the Second World War and never rebuilt. The bridge was part of a high-speed rail link from Berlin to Swinemünde. In Swinemünde, the train carriages were transported to the Swedish coast in ferries.

Only the huge iron lifting mechanism in the middle of the river, including the bridge keeper's house, remained as a "technical monument". It took three minutes to raise the lifting section of the bridge 25 meters. The platform with the rail track was raised one last time before the other parts of the bridge were blown up and still stands in this position today.

Recent plans to remove the iron monster failed because kestrels discovered the bridge as a nesting site. There are said to be 15 pairs that go about their breeding business here, undisturbed by humans.

Today, traffic rolls over the Zecherin Bridge, just a few kilometers away. However, there is no railroad bridge to Usedom. Wagons are only transported to the island by ferry via the Trajekt connection at Wolgast harbor.

Once the largest railroad lift bridge in Central Europe, it was built using a special riveting process by a company from Frankfurt/Oder, which also created the Nieder-Fienow ship lift (see: Oder-Havel connection) and the famous Golden Gate Bridge.

Karnin will probably not get another bridge any time soon, partly because Swinemünde is now Polish and ferry traffic to Sweden runs via other axes (Warnemünde). In any case, experts attest that the old bridge remains in excellent condition. Theoretically, it could be put back into operation.

The railroad house on the bridge embankment dates back to the days when the train, known throughout the country for its speed, thundered over the bridge.

Although the house near the harbor is suffering from "old age", its half-timbered construction alone makes it an impressive building on the former railroad line from Berlin to Swinemünde.

The village's signal tower is the second building that reminds us of more lively times in Karnin. The signal mast, which still exists today, was once used to hoist the flags for communication with the sailors.

At the foot of the hill near the tower, you can stop off at Walter Genz's restaurant - an inn with a coffee garden right next to the private small boat harbor. Locals and those familiar with the area also moor here directly, if the draught of the boat allows. Those unfamiliar with the area should not try it.

As small as the village of Mönchow is, 300 m to the east, it has two sights to offer: a church and a very impressive mausoleum in the cemetery opposite the church. The imposing mausoleum is a burial place created at the turn of the century for the influential C. Dannefeld family and is surrounded by an artistically forged iron fence. The fence is half rusted, the small garden is overgrown and the mausoleum has also suffered the ravages of time. But the small burial house with its architectural gimmicks is definitely worth seeing.

The two small settlements of Karnin and Mönchow no longer have a pastor. The church is looked after from Usedom. If you are lucky, you will have the opportunity to visit the small church when the pastor from Usedom visits Mönchow or gives a sermon here.

The small Kamp harbour, opposite Karnin, has been run by an association since 1995. Smaller festivals are held here every year during the summer season. Otherwise, the area around the fishing village offers an idyllic landscape with views of the bridge ruins.

Zecheriner Brücke: There is a cane weaving mill with a small private harbor on the Usedom side of the Zecherin Bridge. Among other things, shade screens and plaster base mats for nurseries are produced there. The harbor is only suitable for short stays, for example to see how the cane products are made using the hand-weaving method.
