Description

Small harbour in the northwest of the Saaler Bodden.

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach is only recommended for those unfamiliar with the area during the day. In the approach to the harbour, reduced depths of up to 1.5 m are to be expected (see NV.Aktuell).

Berths

Guests will find berths on the north side of the harbour basin or moored alongside on the eastern quay. The harbour has a water depth of 1.8m throughout, the approach tends to silting up and does not allow the use of the water depth in the harbour.

Surroundings

A restaurant is located directly at the harbour. The supply possibilities in the place situated to the west of the harbour are good. There are modern sanitary facilities for guests. Excursions are possible to the beach west of the village or to the artists' village Ahrenshoop. Playing facilities on lawns are available.

NV Land Guide

The traffic noise of the busy Fischlandstraße (150m northwest of the harbour) can hardly be heard at the harbour. If you walk along this road into northern Ahrenshoop, you cross the old border between Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania. In the direction of Ahrenshoop there is a bakery along the road. Further supply possibilities are in the long drawn out place Ahrenshoop. This tourist place on the narrow strip of land Fischland also offers numerous restaurants and cafes, and of course a fine sandy Baltic Sea beach.

The Kunstkate is one of the buildings worth seeing in Ahrenshoop. It is a forum for arts and crafts and artistic exhibitions. It is also a reminder that the place was once a well-known painters' colony around 1900. Today handicrafts dominate. For example, ceramics workshops are located in the Althagen district not far from the harbour.

One of the more unusual buildings is the Ahrenshooper church, built in 1951 from wood and reeds. Its pulpit was made by Ahrenshoop sculptor Doris Oberländer from the trunk of the poplar tree that stood on the site where the church was later built. Famous artists were buried in the old cemetery nearby.

All in all, the number of around 25,000 holidaymakers in summer with only 900 inhabitants makes it clear that peace and tranquillity are not to be expected here during the season. In addition, Ahrenshoop has no bypass and all the traffic to the Darß flows through the middle of the village. In the somewhat off the main road port, however, it is a little quieter.

By the way, Ahrenshoop was considered a holiday resort of the privileged in SED times. Thatched-roof villas bear witness to this.

Since the Fischland, which lies between the Baltic Sea and the Saaler Bodden, is barely wider than 1,500 metres here, the only directions left for hiking are essentially those in which car traffic also moves: north-east and south-west. To avoid the traffic, the "Hohe Ufer", the elevated beach path on the Baltic Sea between the Baltic Sea resorts of Ahrenshoop and Wustrow, should be chosen as the hiking route. Halfway there, you will pass the 18m high Bakelberg, from which large parts of Fischland can be overlooked. At the harbour a hiking trail begins which ends in Born, 5 km to the east, and leads through the Vorderdarß. After 2 km you pass the nature reserve Ahrenshooper Holz on the left, while a dam stretches out on the right.
