In 1859 a fire destroyed almost the whole village of Dierhagen. As a result, there is not much left to see of the former seafaring village, which was first mentioned in a document in 1311. The church, standing on an overgrown plot in the middle of the village, was one of the few buildings to survive the devastating fire.

Massive buildings have taken the place of the medieval half-timbered houses along the village street. Colourful, low fences border the small front gardens along the village streets, some of which are poorly surfaced.

A causeway separates the harbour, 250 metres east of the village, from the village. Here, among reed beds, you will find fish boxes, net piles and an "angler's home" as well as a mooring in a quiet location. Drivers are forbidden to drive over the embankment to the harbour.

Dierhagen Dorf forms only one part of the large-scale Baltic resort of Dierhagen, whose mostly thatched holiday homes are mainly located on the beach on the north-west side of the seaside resort.

The holiday homes show that the beach side is obviously regarded as the chocolate side by holidaymakers. After crossing the road junction at the western end of the town, you come to the beach and the holiday home areas after two kilometres. On the way you pass the Dierhagener Moor, a small nature reserve, on your left. If you continue your way along the Baltic Sea beach to the southwest, you come to the settlement Neuhof after two kilometres and now you can hike back to the south of the Dierhagener Moor via Dändorf to Dierhagen (about five kilometres from Neuhof). With its old seafarers' houses, Dändorf is more tranquil than the sometimes somewhat desolate village of Dierhagen.

But that's not true of Dierhagen's out-of-the-way little harbour, where the locals' fishing boats, fishing boats and flat-bottomed sports boats are moored south of the restaurant and can only be reached via a wooden bridge.

In Klockenhagen, you can see the half-timbered houses that Dierhagen has lacked since the great fire. The village, five kilometres south of Dierhagen, is known for its open-air agricultural museum. In a number of old Mecklenburg buildings the farmer's life in times of threshing is shown. Working tools like old ploughs and mowing machines as well as scientific documentations in barns, farmhouses and day labourers' cottages show the development of agriculture in the past centuries . Here one also learns that Dierhagen has a special position in the Mecklenburg peasant history. While the farmers in the whole of Mecklenburg had to do hard labour, the people of Dierhagen remained their own masters. The small farmers founded a community and leased their land from the Ribnitz St. Klaren monastery in 1664. The Klockenhageners did not succeed in buying themselves out. They had to perform hard servitude as serfs.
