NV Cruising Guide
Navigation
The port can be approached at any time. There are three entrances from the west: the northern approach is easy to navigate and preferable if you are unfamiliar with the area or if the weather is bad. If you come from the inner archipelago fairway, you pass the sheltered but busy Albrektssund Channel. The current is often quite strong and the wind is strong. Attention: The passenger ferry between Koön and Marstrandsön has right of way.
Berths
At the signposted guest jetties on the island of Marstrand there are many berths with water depths of 2 - 6 m. Protection in all wind directions, but in strong winds from the west with corresponding swell can be in the harbour. At the guest berths there are finger jetties or exposed fixed stern lines, stern anchors are prohibited. You can also use free places at Ringens Varv and in front of the pilot bridge on Koön. You can also anchor on good anchoring ground in the bay between Koön, Marstrandsön and Klåverön. There you lie unprotected from the wind from the west. You have to expect quite a lot of traffic at the anchorage, so it is advisable to show anchor signals both at night and during the day. The current generally sets northward through the harbor, but changes with wind direction and water level. The speed is usually under one knot.
Surroundings
Marstrand has experienced a lot. In the Middle Ages monks lived here. It became a nest of sin when herring appeared in large quantities, later a free port and there is the Carlsten fortress with a less than honourable past. It was the prison of the notorious thief Lasse-Maja. This was the stomping ground of society and for King Oscar II. For visitors interested in history there is a lot to see. Meanwhile Marstrand is a popular centre for sailing on the west coast. There are many restaurants, entertainment venues and numerous events during the summer months. The scenic island is known for its bathing cliffs.
