NV Land Guide

This harbour at the Große Breite is something for peace seekers who love walks. At both harbours there is only one house each, otherwise pure nature. Especially the wooded area around Louisenlund Castle, which is now used as a boarding school, to the west of the harbours is ideal for long walks. Towards the east, a rather open landscape awaits the hiker. By the way, this is the widest part of the 40-kilometre-long Schlei. In its north-south extension, it measures a good four kilometres from shore to shore.

Louisenlund originated in its present form as the summer residence of Landgrave Carl von Hessen-Cassel. The governor of Gottorf Castle, who died in 1836, is also to thank for the large park. At the age of 22 he married Princess Louise, daughter of King Frederick V. His second fatherland was Denmark, where he was honoured and decorated several times at the court of Christian VII. Among other things, he was appointed Viceroy of Norway. But he "fled" from the scheming court society and became governor of the duchies. In Louisenlund he devoted himself to Freemasonry, whose ideals strongly influenced his life. The Landgrave had a Masonic tower built here, in which the meetings of the lodge brothers took place. Only the foundations of this tower remain today. He also took into his service one of the most famous dazzling figures of his time, the Count of St. Germain. In the cellar of the Masonic tower, the latter set up a laboratory and tried to extract gold and precious stones from glass. He also wanted to produce a life-prolonging agent. In time the experiments became too expensive for the landgrave, and the unsuccessful Count St. Germain died completely impoverished in Eckernförde in 1748. The landgrave outlived him by 52 years.

One of the outstanding Nordic grounds of the incipient Romantic era was the park at Louisenlund. Today, however, the grounds have few distinctive features, as over time many original details have been altered or removed.

The village of Fleckeby is a 15-minute walk from the harbour and is an ideal starting point for hikes or cycling tours to the Hüttener Berge. The federal road 76 connecting Eckernförde and Schleswig runs through the middle of the village, bus connection in both directions from the village centre. Petrol station, doctors, pharmacy, electrical shop, baker and grocery store are available. By arrangement, the EDEKA market also delivers goods directly to the ship.
