NV Land Guide

The harbor is located in scenic surroundings. The Geltinger Birk nature reserve in particular is worth a hike (see map). However, the Wackerballig marina is more conveniently located in relation to Gelting and the nature reserve than Gelting Mole, from where it takes around half an hour to walk to Gelting.

The Geltinger Birk from Geltinger Noor to Kalkgrund was declared a nature reserve back in 1934. Rare bird species nest here and rare plant species such as the stork's bill, spoonbill and orchid grow here. The Geltinger Birk forest is also known as the ghost forest because of the windswept ancient trees. At the entrance to the hiking trail around the Geltinger Birk peninsula, north of the village of Gelting, stands the "Charlotte" windmill, built in 1824 after the dyking of the Geltinger Noor. The thatched building, originally constructed as a scoop and grain mill, is now privately owned. The main purpose of the mill was to remove excess water from the drained Noor with the help of a water screw. Its sister mill, built nearby in 1932, was unfortunately demolished. On the eastern side of Geltinger Birk, there is a beautiful bathing beach at the foot of the Falshöft lighthouse.

Like the mill, Geltingen Castle is not open to the public. It was a Danish crown estate until 1231 and was then owned by the Ahlefeldts for several centuries. In 1758, Sönke Ingwersen acquired the Geltingen manor house and turned it into a cultural stronghold where, according to tradition, lavish celebrations were held. The baron and baron brought renowned actors, musicians, plasterers and garden architects to Gelting. What was unusual about the baron was that he came from a simple farming background and had, in a way, made it from dishwasher to millionaire. His lucky streak began as a ship's boy after he had artfully splinted a broken leg for the captain of the sailing ship. The captain thanked him by giving the ship's boy a position with the Dutch East India Company in Batavia. The ambitious farm boy eventually became governor in Cheribon on Java and married the beautiful Adriane van der Loo from an old Dutch noble family. A wealthy man, he returned to his native Schleswig, was elevated to the nobility, bought Gelting Castle and had a comedy house built there. As there were usually too few trained actors available for the popular pastoral plays, his servants had to play along. The chambermaid played the youthful naïf, his coachman the youthful lover.

It is definitely worth taking a look inside Gelting church. The medieval carvings on the altar of the church, which was probably built around 1300, are considered to be of particular artistic value. The altarpiece was created between 1520 and 1530.

It is worth mentioning that Gelting has always been one of the most important possessions in the Duchy of Schleswig. Historians assume that the protruding peninsula "Gyälting" was of strategic importance to King Waldemar 11. In King Waldemar's land register from 1231, the property is valued at 30 marks of fine silver. This also included Wakärbol (Wackerballig) and Mynäsbye, a predecessor of Maasholm at the mouth of the Schleim, which later disappeared. For the king, the area was initially a landless region. This meant that his fundamental and legal principle that what belongs to no one belongs to the king
