Information

The current in the Great Belt is primarily dependent on the general weather situation over the North Sea and Baltic Sea and is therefore very changeable.

Tip: Real-time current data can be displayed in the NV Charts app.

Southerly current:
Westerly to northerly to northerly winds usually cause southerly currents. Winds from the NW in particular cause the current to set in very soon. In the fairway east of Sprogö there are often strong currents of 2-3 knots or more. Especially southeast of Kerteminde there is often a neer current. There is often a southerly current on one side of the Belt, while a northerly current runs on the other side.

Northern current:
Winds from NNE over east and south to WSW usually cause a northerly current. In the fairway east and west of Sprogö there is often a strong current of 2 knots. Close under the southeast coast of Langeland and on the west coast of Lolland, a neer current occurs at times. There is often a northerly current on one side of the Belt, while a southerly current runs on the other.
