NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the well-lit harbour is possible by day and night. It takes place in the well buoyed fairway to Rostock with 161.6° up to the west pier and then further in the direction of "Alter Strom". In the area of the west pier, up to 3kn current sets parallel to the coast, depending on wind direction and wind strength. The entrance between the west pier and the east pier is closed to all traffic when ferries are entering or leaving. The traffic situation should be clarified on VHF channel 73 with Warnemünde Traffic.

Attention: Due to silting in the entrance to the Old Stream, the max. permissible draught set at 2.3m (as of January 2020).

Berths

On the east side of the "Alter Strom" are the berths of the larger local yachts, where there is limited space for guests. The water depth here is 3 - 4,5m. The southern part of "Alter Strom" is used by fishing vessels and offers no space for pleasure craft.

NV Land Guide

With around 13,000 inhabitants, Warnemünde is one of the largest holiday resorts on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg. The wide, white beach of the Baltic resort, the steep coast, the beautiful hiking trails in the surrounding area and the idyllic fishermen's houses on the river make up the charm of the town, which is mentioned in documents as early as 1195.

The Rostockers annexed the then small fishing village in 1323 and still rule the important outpost to the Baltic Sea today. Parallels to Travemünde suggest themselves. As Travemünde was for the Lübeck Hanseatic League, Warnemünde was for the Rostock Hanseatic League of such outstanding importance for maritime trade that efforts for independence in the village were always suppressed. For centuries the village consisted of only two rows of houses. Until 1867, independent trade and shipping were forbidden for the people of Warnemünde.

Until the 20th century, a municipal bailiff administered the village at the mouth of the Warnow River. This and the maritime history is remembered in the Warnemünde Museum, a characteristic 18th century fisherman's house in Theodor-Körner-Straße. Fishing was the most important source of income for hundreds of years - until ferry traffic and tourism came along. As early as 1903, the first ferry connection with Gedser in Denmark was established.

Binoculars were indispensable when the baths opened in 1834, as the distance between the ladies' and men's baths was over 100 metres. In a short time, the small, unknown fishing village became one of the most sought-after holiday destinations on the Baltic Sea, with elegant hotels and guesthouses. Everything that had money and a reputation to lose came to Warnemünde. A casino was re-established in the Kurhaus.

In the workers' and peasants' state, the noble touch suffered somewhat, and the preservation of historical monuments was not at its best, although a number of cosy old fishermen's cottages have been preserved along the river and many tourists are attracted to walk along the streets and alleys in the town, which are well worth seeing. In view of the summer hustle and bustle, however, Warnemünde can only be described as idyllic to a limited extent. The fine sandy beaches are, of course, a plus point of the town, which offers numerous restaurants and cafés, not only on the promenade along the river.

The astronomical nature trail in Warnemünde leads to distant planets. The path through our solar system begins near the modern restaurant "Teepott" at the lighthouse. The distances between the planets have been reduced to scale, so that you don't have to wait light years to get back to your boat. Along the Alter Strom, the former sea connection to Rostock, you reach the Warnemünde lighthouse, which was completed in 1898. The 34-metre-high beacon has a range of 20 nautical miles and steals the show from the modern buildings. Among Warnemünde's new landmarks, the Hotel Neptun is particularly striking when coming from the sea, as are the facilities of the large Warnow shipyard.

All in all, Warnemünde is therefore a Baltic seaside resort with minor blemishes, but these are less noticeable than in southern Rostock.
