NV Land Guide

With 75,000 inhabitants, the largest city in the province of Halland bears three hearts in its coat of arms. They are a royal gift from Christian IV, who used them to thank the citizens for their bravery in defending the then Danish city against the Swedes in the mid-16th century. Today, the three hearts serve as a tourist attraction, for example by claiming that the city has three times as much heart as other cities. More accurate, however, would be the claim that it has three times as much beach.

Swedish Riviera is the name given to the town's shores because of its long stretches of sandy beaches. Tylosand, about eight kilometres west of the town, is Halmstadt's best-known beach, where summer visitors flock to bask in the sun, just as they do on Italian Mediterranean beaches. The jet-set custom of retiring to the After Beach around 4 o'clock has become commonplace. That's when you let the ice cubes in your long-drink-filled glasses ring on your holiday property or restaurant terrace.

Halmstadt attracts sun-seekers rather than culture vultures, sworn beach-goers rather than museum-goers. In any case, a major fire in 1619 left little more of the medieval town than the castle, where the administration of the province of Halland now "resides", opposite the sailing club's yacht mooring. Here, the sight of the old sail training ship "Najaden" sweetens the mooring time; but this does not compensate for the traffic noise of the nearby bridge, which crosses the Nissan here.

On the river bank not far from the castle stands the Picasso sculpture "Man and Woman", worth seeing, which the Norwegian Carl Nesjar made in 1971 with Picasso's consent after a smaller original. Stora Torg, the large market in the city centre (200 metres northwest of the guest harbour), is dominated by the Carl-Milles fountain "Europa and the Bull".

Between the market and the shopping street Storgatan is the half-timbered house Tre Hjärtan, which is well worth seeing. A few historic buildings can also be seen nearby on Kyrkogatan, Vallgatan and Klammerdammsgatan. Also on the west bank of the river, but a kilometre north of the market square, is the museum just a few metres from the River Nissan. Here a model of the city, said to be the most beautiful in Sweden, shows Halmstadt as it looked a hundred years ago. It also houses what is said to be the largest collection of southern Swedish carpet paintings, a once-common folk art.

The Hallandsgaarden open-air museum is just a few hundred metres northwest of the town museum. Here, ten historic buildings have been erected on Galgenberg, the former execution site in Halmstadt. In the so-called Miniland, in Tylösandvägen on the western outskirts of the city, castles, manor houses and old half-timbered buildings are a dime a dozen, but only in miniature, about a metre high. Sweden's most famous historical and modern buildings can be seen here in one go.
