Description

Pag with some berthing possibilities is located with its town center at the end of the bay Paški Zaljev in front of the salt lagoons. You can lie before the bridge on the west side on the quay wall (2m), or opposite on the east shore, the town quay on 3-4m water depth with water/stom, but a free place is unfortunately rare. The basin on the east bank in the old town is a local boat harbor. Despite this poor mooring situation, the historic place is definitely worth a visit. You can anchor in the bay in front of the town and moor your dinghy in the boat harbor of the old town. Pag was already before the 7th century B.C. a settlement place of the Illyer and then the Romans (6th century B.C. to 7th century A.D.) came the place. In 1070 Pag was mentioned in documents for the first time. In 1244 the Hungarian king Béla IV. Pag to a free royal town. The prosperity of the town was in the Middle Ages (6th-15th century) the salt mines with the salt trade brought wealth to the town. In the 15th century the plague raged and the town was burnt down. A new town was built, 1 km north of the old one, according to the plans of the famous Dalmatian Renaissance architect Juraj Dalmatinac - streets laid out at right angles, in the center the main square "Trg kralja Petra Kresimira IV" and the late Gothic three-nave basilica. The Prince's Palace residence of the Venetians (15th century), is located on the town square (today the center of the "Pag Cultural Summer"). The Skrivanat Tower (15th c.) is the only one of the nine defense towers of the city wall that has been preserved, today a beautiful walkway leads along the tower. The ruins of the old town are now an archaeological site and a nice place for excursions, with the ruins of the Franciscan monastery and the well-preserved church of St. Mary. Pag cheese, Zutica wine and Pag lace are sold all over Croatia and are popular souvenirs. The museum to the Pag lace is also worth a visit.
