Starigrad-Paklenica on the approx 20km long Rivijera Paklenica,
is located at the foot of the Velebit Mountains and the National
Park Paklenica. The harbor bay with the fired pier is located on
the east coast on the Velebitski Channel. The wide pier has 3 -
3.4m water depth and some mooring places on both sides. The small
pier is for local boats, but on the outside you can moor in free
places with stern anchor (2.2m water depth). There are all
utilities here, as well as emergency doctor and harbor office.
In the 1st century the Roman province of Dalmatia was established
and in today's Starigrad a Roman settlement - Argyruntum. Finds
from 400 graves testify to the prosperity and trade relations. In
the 4th century the Roman Empire collapsed and ended the long
period of peace. In the course of the migration (ca. 375- 568) the
Croats came to Dalmatia. In 1527 the Turks joined, in 1671 the
Venetians followed and until the end of the 17th century, during
the Napoleonic wars, 1815 -18 Dalmatia belonged to the
Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The oldest buildings that can be visited
today are the church of St. George in Rovanjska (9th century) and
the church of St. Peter (13th century), the castles "Večka kula" on
a promontory east of Starigrad and the "Paklarić", built on the
prehistoric ruins above the entrance to the Velika Paklenica. Other
sights in Starigrad and on the Paklenica Riviera are the Vecka
tower, the church of St. George in Rovanjska and the three
fortresses: the St. Trinity near Tribanj, near Modric and Paklaric
at the National Park Paklenica.
Starigrad-Paklenica is there gateway to the 35sqkm "National Park Velika Paklenica". A partially forested mountain range with marked hiking trails up to 1750m, caves and stalactite caves and the most impressive: the two gorges in the Velebitski Mountains. For the inexperienced, the Velika Paklenica (Big Gorge) and the Mala Paklenica (Small Gorge) is only for experienced hikers. The many rare animals, we bears, golden eagles, wolves, dormice, chamois, various other birds of prey and the rare snake eagle or alpine rock partridge will hardly get to see.
