Description

Starigrad-Paklenica on the approx 20km long Rivijera Paklenica, is located at the foot of the Velebit Mountains and the National Park Paklenica. The harbor bay with the fired pier is located on the east coast on the Velebitski Channel. The wide pier has 3 - 3.4m water depth and some mooring places on both sides. The small pier is for local boats, but on the outside you can moor in free places with stern anchor (2.2m water depth). There are all utilities here, as well as emergency doctor and harbor office.
In the 1st century the Roman province of Dalmatia was established and in today's Starigrad a Roman settlement - Argyruntum. Finds from 400 graves testify to the prosperity and trade relations. In the 4th century the Roman Empire collapsed and ended the long period of peace. In the course of the migration (ca. 375- 568) the Croats came to Dalmatia. In 1527 the Turks joined, in 1671 the Venetians followed and until the end of the 17th century, during the Napoleonic wars, 1815 -18 Dalmatia belonged to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The oldest buildings that can be visited today are the church of St. George in Rovanjska (9th century) and the church of St. Peter (13th century), the castles "Večka kula" on a promontory east of Starigrad and the "Paklarić", built on the prehistoric ruins above the entrance to the Velika Paklenica. Other sights in Starigrad and on the Paklenica Riviera are the Vecka tower, the church of St. George in Rovanjska and the three fortresses: the St. Trinity near Tribanj, near Modric and Paklaric at the National Park Paklenica.

Starigrad-Paklenica is there gateway to the 35sqkm "National Park Velika Paklenica". A partially forested mountain range with marked hiking trails up to 1750m, caves and stalactite caves and the most impressive:  the two gorges in the Velebitski Mountains. For the inexperienced, the Velika Paklenica (Big Gorge) and the Mala Paklenica (Small Gorge) is only for experienced hikers. The many rare animals, we bears, golden eagles, wolves, dormice, chamois, various other birds of prey and the rare snake eagle or alpine rock partridge will hardly get to see.
