Description

Tourist harbour on the west coast of the Saaler Bodden.

NV Cruising Guide

Navigation

The approach to the buoyed but not lit fairway is only recommended during the day. From the fairway leading to Ribnitz you steer in the Saaler Bodden from buoy Wu 1 through the buoyed fairway and have the church Wustrow ahead. Outside the buoy line it is very shallow. Between buoys 3 and 5 there is often silting in the fairway.

Berths

The harbour basin tends to silting up. Moorings can be found in the sailing club inlet to starboard at about 1.3m water depth. Few places on 1,5m water depth at the south end of the jetty at port. Approach sands up to 1,1m (see NV.Current).

Surroundings

Sanitary facilities are available. The supply possibilities in the place are very good.

Fischland and Darß invite to extensive wanderings. On the west side of the peninsula there are good bathing possibilities.

Although Bodstedt has the reputation of being the Zeesboat harbour par excellence, Zeesboat sailing is no less cultivated in Wustrow. A board at the harbour informs about the 10m long oldtimers with the wide hulls, which replaced the ponderous Zees boat in the 19th century. After that, the Zees boats were mainly used for trawling in the Bodden waters between Rügen, Greifswald, Stralsund and Barth. Across the wind the boat drifted with tightly hauled sheets when the bottom trawl (the Zeese) was towed. To open the net  the trawl lines were driven to tuck trees extending far beyond the stern and bow (see also Bodstedt).

The Zeese was a bottom trawl about 25 m long. When towing (Zeesen), the net was pulled slowly over the bottom of the water.

Most Zeesboote were ketch-rigged and had a water-flowing fish compartment called a "Däken". For the most part, the recreational boaters who own such a vintage vessel today take care to preserve the boats in their traditional form. It gets exciting in Wustrow in July, when the Zeesbootregatta takes place here. Already in the days of trawling, the fishermen are said to have been gripped by ambition at the sight of a "competitor". Then the whole cloth stopped until shortly before the harbour, just to show the stern to the other.

We already informed in detail at Bodstedt about history and peculiarities of the Zeesboote, which are sailed by a small "sworn community", but have many followers among the oldtimer-enthusiastic sailors.

The Baltic resort of Wustrow is a cosy holiday spot with a long seafaring tradition.

The maritime past is also a prominent theme at Fischlandhaus, the local history museum 500m northeast of the harbour. In addition to the seamen's souvenirs, old skipper's chests can also be seen, in which many a sailor stored all his belongings.

On Bäderstraße, about 100 m northwest of the harbour, the house "Schifferwiege" (skipper's cradle) recalls glorious times with a three-master depicted above the front door. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Wustrow was the largest seafaring village on the Fischland. Thus, the restaurants still bear names such as "Cape of Good Hope", which many a Wustrow sailor rounded. Old captain's houses and fishermen's cottages testify to the fact that seafaring was the livelihood.

Already the open trading ships of the Slavs cruised in the waters off Wustrow in the year 900 when many openings existed between the Bodden and the Baltic Sea. Fischland, which today connects Darß with the mainland, was an island. Still around 1400 the fishermen and farmers could sail over the Permin arm from the Bodden into the Baltic Sea. But because the Hanseatic League feared upstart competition, it sank old ships in the sea link, so that the arm silted up.

The unmissable church at the harbour is one of the most impressive buildings in the community of 1,200 people. Standing on a small hill, the old brick building looks even more powerful than it already is. A crooked rock staircase leads to the entrance of the church. The regular concerts during the summer months offer the opportunity to visit, whereby the panoramic view from the platform of the church tower crowns the visit. At the same time, you can already "look out" for the hiking trails in the surrounding area. Away from the traffic noise, we recommend the hike along the "Hohe Ufer", the Baltic Sea coast to Ahrenshoop (3 km), where the SED celebrities made themselves comfortable in thatched-roof villas. Although Ahrenshoop does not offer any special sights, the hike along the amber coast is a nature experience and if you are lucky, you will find a piece of the "Gold of the North".
