Description

Kaprije was first settled 400 years ago, many old stone houses and the church are still preserved. The island name comes from the Mediterranean plant caper, which grows here along with laurel and rosemary on the island.
The 150 inhabitants live from fishing, fruit growing - the olives, figs, pomegranates, citrus fruits and the mulberry trees. Over the centuries, stone walls up to 4m high and 3m wide were piled up as windbreaks for the fields. Today you can still see the 100 square meter stone basins - the former rain catchment basins for the island's water supply. Water had to be brought at times also with ships, today there is a modern water supply.

The island is today quite barren, 1990 burned large parts of the vegetation, including the many old pine trees, only the southwest side of the island was spared.
For divers, the island is a popular destination - because in front of the northern tip of the island is the wreck of the 1943 sunk "Francesca da Rimini" in 40m depth. One of the 3 masts rises 28 meters into the air to this day and the wreck is considered a popular diving destination.
