Description

Žirje is one of the southernmost islands of Kornati. It has always been an outpost in the Sibenik Archipelago and has remained so until today. Electricity has arrived only in the main town of Zirje, water comes by ship or is collected in cisterns. Only the fewest tourists reach the island.
The name is derived from the Croatian Žir (acorn). Presumably, the island used to be covered with a holm oak forest. Its location made it a guard post as early as the 6th century and the Byzantine Empire built fortresses on the two mountains, which were destroyed by the Turks in the 16th century, but the ruins can still be seen.
