Description

The island is made of limestone, which was formed 100 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. Here lies the quarry Veselje, one of the quarries for the extraction of limestone blocks. Its quality and beauty is also due to the marine organisms with which it is interspersed. The Romans also recognized this and used the marble in villas, amphitheaters, temples, palaces and tombs.

Many famous buildings were built with Brac marble, such as Diocletian's Palace in Split, the medieval bell towers and cathedrals in Šibenik and Trogir, the White House in Washington, D.C., the Parliament and Hofburg in Vienna, the Parliament in Budapest and the State Palace in Trieste, and these are only a few of the most famous. Also many artists of the antiquity used Brac marble for their sculptures.

The most important quarries can be found in the coastal zone, due to the transport, raw blocks and work pieces were transported by ships - see Milna.

In Pučišća there is one of the few stonemasonry schools in Europe for 100 years, here still today apprentices are trained as in Michelangelo's time to form works of stone with hammer and chisel.
